Hi Officer Michelle

I’ve lived in my current house on G Street for a bit over a year an in that time, a new neighbor in the apartment building two doors down has moved in. She has a dog who she just lets out her door to go to the bathroom. Being the closest house with an accessible yard, her dog makes a b-line to my house to go to the bathroom. Now, we’ve confronted her a few times and have asked her to, at the very least, follow her dog out and clean up after him but, despite her promises, it never happens. And every time we go out to do yard work, mow the lawn, etc. we’re greeted by "doggie land mines". Is there anything we can do about this?

Dear originalgabriel,

There certainly is….get your camera out and snap a photo of the dog leaving its deposit on your lawn. Call Animal Control at either 311 or 264-5011, and make a complaint. You will need to have the address of the offender’s owner. Animal control will send an animal care worker out to the address to speak with the owner. If the problem persists, the dog owner will be cited. Additionally, the landlord may not even allow pets. The landlord is another way to go. There’s nothing worse than stepping in a dog’s business. Good luck!

Officer Michelle

rat your neighbor out to their landlord. great advice. and as if animal control needs to waste their time with this. why not just poop on their lawn or at least lay down the smack?

FFT, tryng to understand where the respect for others is in this response, and if it is OK when others defecate on your property? The "rat out" thing sounds odd. The landlord is the property owner, and the true neighbor, who has concerns and responsibility about the tenents.

Put the dog feces in a brown paper bag, place it on the front porch of your neighbor, light in on fire and ring the doorbell. Either run like Hell or simply stand there and watch how your neighbor handles the burining bag of dung.

As for the officer's response. GREAT advice and anyone thinking it isn't, should have their yard crapped on by law enforcement officers.

I carry plastic baggies that come with vegetables from the grocery stores. Always have two or three in my hip pocket. Petsmart gives out free baggies in front of their stores. There's no excuse for letting your pet leave a public trail. That tenant probably tosses her empty soda cups and sandwich wrappers in the street too.

and for an added twist, try a neighbor who is going through chemotherapy and milks the sympathy. this neighbor does the exact same thing, opens the door and lets the dog do the business while she smokes, yes smokes. not only does she not pick up the mess, she litters the cigarette butt onto the shared lawn. she also does this in the alley. out of sympathy should all the neighbors not say anything and just vent to each other or do we make her accountable? this situation has been on-going before she was diagnosed with cancer too, so i'm hesitant to show sympathy.
