Metro EDGE kicks off with a Wednesday night launch party.

Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, developer Mike Heller Jr. and KCRA anchor Adrienne Bankert will speak at the event, which will be held from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at L Wine Lounge, 1801 L St.

The Sacramento Metro Chamber formed the group to promote Sacramento's vitality and growth by stemming an exodus of talented people leaving for major cities.

The goal is to hold onto young energy and ideas that help build cultural, social and business opportunities rivaling other major cities, said Metro EDGE's chairwoman, Autumn Heacox of Sierra View General Contractor.

Metro EDGE and the chamber intend to develop business and civic leaders among Generation X and Generation Y creatives, professionals, entrepreneurs and college grads.

The group will offer professional development, networking events and organized activities involving such issues as transportation, development, job growth, arts and culture, green technology and sustainable living. The program also will create a forum for these generations to discuss regional issues.

The group was initiated to complement the chamber's Leadership Sacramento program, started in 1985 to promote leaders who want to serve the community.

I will be in attendance, as well as celebrating a friends birthday, Ali of Sacramento Magazine. 2 birds with one stone.

What they don't say is that it is limited to the 20-40 age group, and that they charged $25.00 at the door. I got a strong whiff that this group is nothing but a sorority/fraternity for hipster (almost entirely WASP) proffesionals to "network." It has nothing to do with any civic or social responsibility.

When they say it was for "to promote leaders who want to serve the community" what they meant was, this group is for the those who want to be part of the good-o'l-boys club.

Kevin Johnson should be ashamed of promoting this group. He obliviously has forgotten from whence he came.

I went and was rather disheartened at the whole ordeal.

Well, technically they're too young to be good ol' boys, but other than that, yeah, pretty much.

I completely agree with you Jim about the crowd! Not the "diverse" group the website promised.

As a former employee of a Chamber I know these types of organizations can do great things in a community, in addition to providing great networking opportunities (which should be one of the main goals of Chambers of Commerce). If the committees buckle down and focus on the true mission of the organization, the tone and its membership population could change. I attended last night and while I was not one of the types you described (I actually felt a little out of place, which I rarely do), I’m sticking around to see what could come of this new group.

You went to the event but failed to stay for the event. Do you always stand on the sidelines and complain about things you fail to engage? You name call and demean a group because of a “strong whiff” that you smelled? I wonder if that smell was not the stench of your lack of action to change this city and the environment we all have to live and work in. I am sorry that you are now over 40 and feel a sense of accomplishment by trying to tear down others that are succeeding in creating something you did not. Life is for the living and those that choose to take action to create a environment they are proud of. I am glad somebody is doing something other than “Bitch”.

PS – I disagree with your assessment of the group based on the description of the categorizations you used in your original response.

Civic Responsibility is defined as the "responsibility of a citizen" (Dictionary.com). It is comprised of actions and attitudes associated with democratic governance and social participation. Civic responsibility can include participation in government, church, volunteers and memberships of voluntary associations. Actions of civic responsibility can be displayed in advocacy for various causes, such as political, economic, civil, and environmental or quality of life issues.

Civic means, "of, relating to, or belonging to a city, a citizen, or citizenship, municipal or civil society" (ibid.).

Responsibility refers to "the state or quality of being responsible or something for which one is responsible such as a duty, obligation or burden" (ibid.).

Hey Reno before you spout off about my community involvement, you should do some research on who I am and what I do.

BTW after I wrote my opinion I was contacted by several people who attended and agreed upon my assessment...

If you want to mouth off and support the frat boys...at least use your real name.

While I appreciate the “Do you know who I am” intro to your comment, I am even less impressed by search results that come up when I do try to learn who you are. What I did find out is that you have over 8 pages of negative online responses to any content posted on this web site. After reading as much negativity as I could take from your style of online wisdom, I figured out my time was worth more than this. Enjoy your online world.

Thanks to all that came to last night's Metro EDGE Launch! We're excited about Engaging, Developing, Giving and Empowering the next generation of leaders. Sacramento is our home, and it's our responsibility to become civically involved in the Region's most pressing issues. Metro EDGE hopes to educate our members and give them a platform by which they can be heard! As Adrienne Bankert said last night, 1 in 4 people living in Sacramento are 18-35... This means we have a huge opportunity and responsibility to become more engaged in our city NOW! We invite you to join us in creating an even better Sacramento to live, work and play.
