Looking to play basketball without adding another monthly bill for a gym membership? Well, you're in luck. It seems that every day in Sacramento there is a pick-up basketball game with your name on it.

Games occur regularly at the Coloma Center (47th & T), McKinley Park (3330 Mckinley Blvd.), Roosevelt Park (10th & P St.), Southside Park (6th & T St.) and Sutter Middle School (3150 I St.). So if you're in the Midtown area of Sacramento, there is probably a game going on in your neighborhood.

Brian Lenz, a man who considers himself one of the hardest street-ballers around and believes that basketball reveals one's true personality, agreed to an interview after a pick-up game at Roosevelt Park. Surprisingly, pick-up basketball games have been satisfying the community's passion for basketball for over 20 years, 10 of which Brian has been actively participating.

Another Roosevelt Park player, Johnny, tells me that in his two years of playing, the sportsmanship has been "pretty good with no fights." The scene at Roosevelt Park confirmed Johnny's statement with great sportsmanship and quickly resolved disputes.

According to Lenz, the true definition of street ball is unorganized pick-up games. So it's a hit or miss as to whether or not you'll find a game when you show up to the court. For best results, swing by around noon or 6 p.m.

Nice article. I miss playing so much! I used to play at 10th and P, McKinley and many other parks in the city. But I paid a price for all those years on the concrete. My ankles and knees can't handle the impact anymore. If I play on concrete for more than about 15 minutes it's hard to get out of bed the next day. Argh. Note of caution to young guys reading this: Try to play in the gym. The pavement destroys cartilage.

Very nice. But what I want to know is how many people usually attend such events. How long do they play? Can women join on the fun? Is this an everyday occurrence? Typically, what is the average age group of people who play? I would also suggest you contact the Sacramento Police department to see how many times a they have been called out, if any, to such events. It would be interesting to know more. But overall, good job!
