“Grease is the word” was heard throughout the Crest Theatre Sunday during the first Grease sing-a-long put on by Outword Magazine.

Nearly 400 people filled the Crest Theatre, singing and dancing to all of the classics, such as “Grease Lightning,” “Summer Love” and “You’re the One That I Want.”

For me the highlight of the event was the participation of attendees including myself who went all out dressing up as their favorite characters while dancing, singing and even strutting across the stage in costume.

“This was a great idea," said Allison Reyes, who attended the event. "I came because my 3-year-old daughter hasn’t ever seen Grease, so it kind of brought all the generations together: my mother, grandmother and my daughter.”

Among the festivities was the audience judged costume contest, a huge hit among die hard Grease fans such as myself, featuring some of the most memorable Grease characters. Eugene, the dorky overachiever (played by David Fulk) won the top prize of $100. I won second place and four tickets to the Trash Film Orgy Halloween as Sandy, the lovable goody-two-shoes whose bad side came to surface. Knicky, the tough ‘T’ Bird with a reputation to protect (played by Nathan Seither) took third place, winning 10 tickets to the California State Fair.

“This is my 76th time seeing the movie,” Fulk said.

Outword Magazine publisher and president of the Rainbow Chamber of Commerce, Fred Palmer, said, “I thought a sing-a-long would be really fun and family-friendly, and we added a costume contest to get people involved and have even more fun.”

Palmer said he hopes to put on more sing-a-longs in the future. He is working on sing-a-long Xanadu and The Little Mermaid.

How did this work, was the film played on the screen at any point? Was the musical accompaniment live or played on speakers? Where did people dance?

The film was played on the screen the entire time and when a song came on the words came on the bottom of the screen. It was like movie karaoke and people danced all over the theater, especially when "Grease Lightning" came on everybody knew the moves to that one. =)
