My first shopping trip to Safeway with a reusable shopping bag of my own proved to be very successful. I finally used my Sacramento Press grocery bag to get a few necessities and was pleasantly surprised by how much I could fit into it.

Exactly how much did I fit into the bag, you ask? Let me count the groceries:

  • 3 boxes of cereal
  • A half gallon of milk
  • 4 frozen dinners
  • 3 bags of frozen vegetables
  • 9 yogurts
  • 2 packages of cheese
  • 1 loaf of bread
  • 1 package of tortillas
  • 5 cans of soup

The Safeway bagger made it all fit perfectly. While it was heavy I was happy to be only carrying one bag and more importantly knowing that bag was not plastic.

If I had a family of five to feed, this might be more difficult to accomplish, however with multiple bags and a cart – it could be possible.

Have you made the switch to reusable bags? Have you seen other people doing it? Do you think it will catch on? Would you like to make fun of the food I eat?

This is a little weird, but I actually had a dream about using my SacPress grocery bag last night.

How does one buy a SacPress grocery bag? I must have missed that in an earlier article. Thanks

Hi, Bob.
You didn't miss it. I actually didn't mention that in the story. If you would like one, you can stop by our office at 431 I Street near the Amtrak Station, or we can send you one. E-mail me your address to colleen@sacramentopress.com or you can call 916-443-5403 and ask for Nicholas. We'll get you one so you too can shop with fewer bags!

You know it really is cool to bring a bag to the store, I use to use my backpack, load it up and bike home. Hey I wonder, do they take of four cents for using your own bag? Because when I used my backpack they took off four cents for every bag saved. Not much, I know, but it's kinda cool.

Yeah, you get a bag credit also for bringing in your own bag.
