Besides being highly competitive year in and year out, the defending-champion Sacramento River Cats have a number of promotional events to keep fans engaged and entertained throughout the season. One of those events is the second year of the Miller Lite 'Que and Brew, every Thursday night home game this season.
Held in the Jackson Rancheria Home Run Terrace near left field, the 'Que and Brew offers $2 Miller and Miller Light beers as well as tri-tip, hot dogs and hamburgers, among other foods. Doors open to the 'Que and Brew at 6 p.m. and close around 8:30 p.m., which is usually around the fifth or sixth inning.
The area is sealed off for only those 21 or older in an attempt to draw a more college-age demographic to the ballpark, giving them their own place at the game to have a good time.
“We have always appealed to a family atmosphere, but we’re also trying to bring in more people ages 21 to 35 to come out to the games,” said Senior Marketing Manager Danna Bubalo. “We advertise at colleges with fraternities and sororities in the area to get them involved, and we’ve had a lot of success so far.”
The Home Run Terrace provides people with comfortable seating, flat-screen TVs to watch other baseball games and a clear view of the field. There is also a grass area in front of the terrace with lawn chairs as well as space for blankets for those who prefer to spread out.
This week's 'Que and Brew was packed with people eating, drinking and mingling at the tables under the roof of the terrace and in front on the grass during the game. It filled up around 6:45 p.m. and remained full for much of the game leading up to 8:30 p.m.
Built for large groups and special events, the terrace, Media Relations Coordinator Nick Lozito said, is the best place to watch the game.
“We just remodeled it last year, and it kind of feels like you’re watching the game from your backyard,” Lozito said. “It looks kind of like a huge outdoor patio. And we get pretty big crowds, so they seem to like the setup.”
Every 'Que and Brew has also had a band that plays from 6 p.m. till the start of the game, which is typically around 7 p.m. However, Lozito said the band scheduled canceled last minute this week, but that there’s always been music with the festivities.
When not used for the 'Que and Brew, the terrace can be reserved for groups anywhere between 60 and 120 people. Special food and drink deals can be arranged for those customers who would like it catered.
The only remaining 'Que and Brew for this season is Aug. 27 when the River Cats play their division-rival Fresno Grizzlies. Ticket prices range from $7 to $40 depending on where your seated and the day of the game. There is no charge to be a part of 'Que and Brew.
