Fans from all over Northern California gathered to see Bay Area rap legend Too Short perform Friday night at former Sacramento Kings Chris Webber's club Center Court in Natomas. Patrons were in good spirits all night long with hip hop music filling the air as the drinks poured from the bar. TV screens wrapped the walls showing music videos, many of which were from Too Short to get the crowd ready for the legend's appearance. “I’ve been a fan of Too Short since ‘Don’t Fight the Feelin,’” said club promoter Tina Cris from Keen Management. “Don’t Fight the Feelin” was a single off of the rapper's 1988 album “Life Is… Too Short.” This shows how loyal Too Short fans are in Northern California.

It didn’t take long for the club to fill up with fans. “It looked like a sea of people on the dance floor, it was a better turn out than we expected,” said club promoter Richard Beir of EHP Entertainment. Too Short entered the stage around one a.m. being introduced by club owner Chris Webber with fans screaming the rappers name. With no opening act, Too Short started the night off with the lead single from his 2003 album “Married to the Game” song “Shake that Monkey.” With a drink in his left hand, and a microphone in his right hand, the rapper still managed to greet his fans while performing giving hive fives and handshakes to the audience throughout his performance.

Too Short has made a career for himself with rapping raunchy lines and telling stories of sexual prowess. His fans the whole time have loved him for it; men and women both. When the rapper performed “Freaky Tale” from his 1987 album “Born to Mack,” the crowd erupted. The show wrapped up around two a.m. with a pleased audience. Too Short has a career that has spanned over two decades. In an industry where artist are lucky to last one year, he has proven he is one of hip hop legends and is a hero to Northern California.

He started at 1 a.m.? However many people there were, that's a devoted following that waits until 1 a.m. with no opening act!

I seriously wish I would have been there to hear "I'm A Player." I once went on a van skateboard tour with 6 dudes in a van and we had one, yes, ONE, cassette. I was Get In Where You Fit In and we heard that loop over and over. Best part? It never got old. Classic album. Bummed to have missed that one.

The link between the Bay Area and Sacramento hip-hop scenes definitely needs more press, so it's good to see it getting some attention with this article. Random story: My friend and I were walking around downtown Eugene a few weeks before I graduated and we saw a huge line of people in front of the WOW Hall (one of the town's few all age venues). Ends up Too Short was supposed to perform that night but got stranded in Alaska and never showed. Everyone in front of the venue looked pretty disappointed. I don't think he had an opener or anything on that night either and the crowd just got their money back.
