The Sacramento Press hit the street recently to get people's opinions about businesses the city could use. This week's question:
What businesses have you seen in another city or country that Sacramento needs, or needs more of?
Ed Eriksson, 42
Information Technology Consultant
Wilhaggin
"Street vendors selling more street food. It'd be good in parks -- like downtown parks -- or along J Street. In Vietnam, they're everywhere. So at like 5 a.m., you can get chicken soup for 50 cents. Different kinds of food come out at different times. We need to import 400 Vietnamese women with yokes carrying around traditional food. I think it'd add a liveliness to the streets to have mobile businesses like that."
Bonnie Noble, 54
Healthcare Professional
Downtown
"I would be interested in those Zipcars -- those services where you can rent cars by the hour. I was planning on selling my car. I like to walk to work or use public transportation wherever possible. But occasionally, you need a car."
Emeka Akamike, 56
Research Scientist and Author
Sacramento
"Sacramento needs to have a lot of things. In terms of business, there are more franchises. What they really need is a high-tech structure to coordinate a lot of businesses. And a small biotech area, apart from the University of Davis. An area to do basic research."
Brooke Haley, 27
Law Office Administrator/Assistant Film Director
Downtown
"Internet cafes. Mostly because if you go to any other major city, like Guadalajara or Oaxaca, they'll have Internet cafes everywhere. It's (Sacramento is) a city you would hope would be kind of international, but it's really not. You have people come in from all over the place and you don't see any place where there's an Internet cafe."
Manny Singh, 24
Fund Accountant
Natomas
"I would say more of a night scene downtown. Somewhere you could kind of hang out. An outdoor mall or restaurant -- stuff that would stay open late and cater to the over-21 crowd. Everything seems to close down downtown, except clubs. And if you don't want to do clubs, you need something where you can sit down. I lived in Southern California. The majority of the stuff I've seen is Dave and Buster's (restaurant, bar and arcade) or Fox Sports Grill. They're kind of like a sit-down type of restaurant with a sports bar on the side."
Kate Dadey
Federal Government Agency Supervisor
Land Park
"Places where you can make your own beer. I know there's one, but we need more. I like beer. And it's a very creative thing. I've thought of doing it as a team-building exercise. And you get to enjoy it afterwards. "

We were told that we needed 1,000 potential members. For the public to do it alone is a daunting task, but we do plan to move forward toward the end of August as best we can. Would you be willing to survey your network of friends, coworkers and neighbors to see the potential from your side and then work with us?
If so, please reply to me below and I give Ben, of sacpress permission to give you my contact information. I'm going to be gone starting tomorrow for a week and would like to hear from you when I get back.
