South Sacramento’s Junior Giants league kicked off their summer season with a great opening day at George Sim Park, located at 6207 Logan St., last Saturday. Kids, ages 5-14, gathered with their parents for a fun-filled day as the teams played their first game.
The teams play games every Saturday until August 22 when the closing ceremony will be held. The league is still accepting enrollment for children ages 5-7 and is looking for additional coaches from the community.
Junior Giants, which started in 1994, was created to give kids a meaningful partnership with community-based organizations and to provide an alternative to drugs, gangs and crime. The Junior Giants Program now serves 15,000 children in 80 leagues across California, Nevada and Oregon.
Junior Giants focuses on four bases of character development: confidence, integrity, leadership and teamwork. The Junior Giants is a free, non-competitive, co-ed league with professional training for the kids provided by the coaches.
