The folks I speak with are really quiet envious of these furlough folks. To only get a mild pay cut AND get time off in the worst economic setback in decades? Party on! The high benifit packages appear to be left intact, so ride it out with a part time job.

To many state workers who are subject to furlough days, these cuts feel anything but "mild." In particular, households in which both spouses are state workers are suffering from an alarming double-cut to their income.

In addition, one simply has to walk the blocks surrounding the state capitol on a Friday afternoon to see how damaging these furlough days are to our local business environment. The impact is felt not only with business owners, but with staff as well.

As local businesses scale back their hours and the hours of their employees, there is less opportunity for part-time work for "lucky" furlough employees.

I agree they may have a hard time with it, but compared to the retail industry, the cuts are not too bad, and that is my point. Retail unemployement is about 40% in Sacramento DMA, and those surviving are working longer hours with reduced pay (20-60% pay reductions) and reduced or removed benifits. (thats the part most often discussed with people in retail that I work with, the comparison to State workers who get less of a pay cut and yet get a time off to make it up...you can imagine the chatter, I am sure. And the benifits comparison is like two different worlds) Just making a comparison to keep things real.
