Valerie Hart, owner of online fashion boutique itsMySecret, loves to be a vendor during the Second Saturday Art Walk.
At 71 years old, Valerie Hart had a lot of challenges in starting an online business, so she enlisted the help of her husband, Dennis Hart, a photographer and computer guru.
Even though her boutique is online, she vendors at Second Saturday selling accessories for women such as bags, jewelry, belts and watches. She orders her merchandise from other fashion designers around the U.S. and caters toward the youthful crowd with merchandise that is more affordable.
"We really didn't feel like we wanted to have another type of store to walk into," she said. "We realized that the future really is online and people are gravitating to that."
itsMySecret started out with high-quality products from designers, but Hart is the one who makes all of the decisions.
"It's controlled by us, we don't have landlords, we don't have people telling us what to do," she said. "Once we've purchased our merchandise, it's basically ours. We show it the way we want to on the website. We can change the ideas and the concept of it. I like the creativity of that."
Hart's online fashion boutique got its name while she and her husband were driving.
"I've always loved gardening and so I've always wanted a secret garden," she said. "One time, Dennis and I were driving and I say, 'Oh! I just found a name for the business!' and he says, 'What is it?' and so I say, 'Shhh, It's My Secret.' In a way, it could be different, but I like it because of the curiosity. It could be sheets and blankets, it can be anything."
Hart's son, Paul, tipped them off about the Second Saturday Art Walk. He invited his parents to come up in May to see what it was like.
Valerie fell in love with it. So, Paul did a little PR work and talked to Michael Kennedy, owner of Kennedy Art Gallery on 20th and K right next to Head Hunters. With a few e-mails, contacts and picture-sending, the Harts were able to vend right outside of Kennedy's Gallery during the June Second Saturday.
Coming from San Mateo, she chose to become a vendor for Second Saturday because of the youthfulness and artistic influence in Sacramento.
"The young people here that keep the city growing and changing is just really delightful," she said. "They're hungry for it, and they want fashion. Sacramento is really progressive with fashion."
This Saturday, Hart expects Sacramentans to see a lot of different merchandise and displays from the last Second Saturday. "As a vendor, we want to change the look and everything," she said. "The first one allowed us to look and see what people are really looking for. We want to bring really different items that people in Sacramento are looking for."
"We want to basically have a boutique on wheels. We are really focused on having an outside boutique," Dennis said.
itsMySecret will be vending this Second Saturday outside of the Kennedy Art Gallery at 2110 K Street.
