Fresh Producers is the brainchild of Rabbi David Wechsler Azen.  Last week I had the opportunity to interview him about this project.  His mission was to get  "kids to eat better" especially in neighborhoods where fresh, healthy food is not always available or accessible.  Unique was his solution to use students to do the marketing and management thus giving them hands on, real life business experience.  His workforce also includes peer trainers.

A central organization was established to do the ordering and financial transactions.  Along with Rabbi David, the central organization includes  Steve Sullivan, Chief Operating Officer, who is retired from HP with 28 years of experience in global management, Richard Fujinami, an accountant, Pat Duffy, Director of Personnel and Volunteers, and LaTisha Lawson, an Oak Park activist and community organizer.

The Fresh Producers Project is getting funding from the California Endowment, Kaiser Permanente, Sutter Health Foundation and smaller groups and individuals.  The Project will be working with the Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services, WIC, The Boys and Girls Club and health and wellness community service projects.

Patrick Mulvaney, of Mulvaney's Building and Loan restaurant, and possible other local chefs will create recipes to be distributed with the food.  A midtown market is also planned.  The idea of combining wonderful fresh produce, delivery routes, a market, and healthy recipes will not only benefit the recipients but the young entrepeneurs as well.  I hope to be able to write more about this exciting fresh new idea (pun intended)!

Why fresh fruit? What was the impetus behind Rabbi Azen's decision to pursue this particular charity effort?

It doesn't seem like a typical charity that a religious leader would pursue, Very interesting piece.

I was actually going to contribute to others working on healthy eating as a result of giving away charity from greeting cards that had medical photos and biological information about healthy cells and organs, and then had this idea, found out no one else was pursuing this approach and decided children's health was more important than greeting cards. At the same time, many religious leaders understand that without proper nutrition the soul suffers too, so it's not that far out of line!

I remember Rabbi David stopping in my office to talk to me about his idea and in order to get feedback. Now it's up and running- wow! Way to go Rabbi David!

How does one go about becoming a peer trainer? What types of people do this job?

Good question! Fresh Producers has a website - Freshproducers.org. I will continue to find out more about the project and report it. But, for those interested in getting involved or have more questions, the website and contacts you can find there will help. Thanks so much for your interest.
